• FDA Committee Chair: "Congress is Owned by Pharma"

Dr. Raeford Brown is a pediatric anesthesia specialist at the UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital. He also chairs the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Committee on Analgesics and Anesthetics. Dr. Brown has been openly critical of the FDA and their lack of oversight on the pharmaceutical industry, claiming "Congress is owned by pharma.” His comments were recently reported by Adriana Belmonte at Yahoo Finance. "Pharmaceutical companies are under the spotlight with congressional hearings on the cost of drug prices and allegations of the industry’s role in the opioid crisis. Dr. Raeford Brown, a pediatric anesthesia specialist at the UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital and chair of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Committee on Analgesics and Anesthetics, has been openly critical of big pharma and the lack of proper oversight from the FDA. Despite many politicians, particularly declared presidential candidates, beginning to speak out against big pharma, Brown does not think that anything will come out of it 'because Congress is owned by pharma.'" The article documents how pharmaceutical companies are making significant financial contributions to politicians and political candidates. Statistics are based on OpenSecrets, a website operated by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks money in U.S. politics. “The pharmaceutical industry pours millions of dollars into the legislative branch every single year,” he told Yahoo Finance. “In 2016, they put $100 million into the elections. That’s a ton of money.” Dr. Brown went on to say: “I’m really much more concerned because Congress is supposed to have oversight for the FDA. If the FDA isn’t going to hold pharma accountable, and Congress is getting paid to not hold pharma accountable, then it really doesn’t matter who the president is because it’s really about Congress.”

Listening to Fox News and they were discussing the subject of mandatory vaccines. Of course they all agreed because Big Pharma signs their paychecks. Well Jesse Waters actually said, “You give me mumps and I’ll sue you for criminal endangerment.” This is what it has come too. He was angry and very serious. This is what is being promoted on the news! Where’s the investigative journalism ? They certainly didn’t do any.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has reported that during non-election years, pharmaceutical advertising accounts for 70% of the advertising in the corporate media like Fox News. And the Murdoch Family who owns Fox News is heavily invested in drug companies.

The Doctor is right. Much of Congress and many candidates are owned lock, stock and barrel by the pharmaceutical cartels. It is only now, under the current administration (who can afford to buy a man with "more money than God"??) that these issues are being addressed. However, there are clear signs that the Congress views this as busy work, not the serious issue of graft, crime and corruption that it really is.

Beware those who's stance has changed recently - optics are important for they are the very basis of good marketing. And make no mistake - being elected to federal office these days - especially in a popular vote situation - is ALL about marketing and very little else.

I have not yet seen a candidate that has declared for any federal position that has more substance than they do PR and spin. Nor have I seen one that has a cursory understanding of the Constitution let alone the issues facing the nation.

EVERY. SINGLE. ABC agency needs to be dismantled and re-worked from beginning to end, inside, outside and sideways. We also need a thorough re-working of the rules Congress operates by.

Uncle Sam Destroying Agriculture and Facts Don't Matter agencies are among the most egregious offenders of both sensibility and ethics this country has ever seen. Congress joins them making it a 4-way tie. We need real leadership in Washington. Not a bunch of corporate whores waiting for the next handout big enough to buy their vote. And, we need a public willing to demand it.
